Baraga businessman gets CTE award

HANCOCK — The Copper Country Association of School Boards recently
presented Mark Massicotte with the 2017 Community Leadership Award.

George Stockero, Copper Country Intermediate School District (CCISD)
superintendent, said Massicotte has been a strong advocate for
connecting business and education in the area.

“He is working to bring other business owners together to support
Career and Technical Education programs throughout the region,”
Stockero said. “Mark is a leader on the CTE Steering Committee that is
working to create a plan to expand CTE classes throughout the Copper
Country Intermediate School District.”

Since 2009, Massicotte has been an active member of the Michigan
Works! Workforce Development Board and now serves as chairman of
the Workforce Development Board for the UPWARD Talent Council of
Michigan Works!

“Mark is credited with answering the call to help reorganize the
Workforce Development Board when no one else would,” Stockero said.
“He took the appropriate actions to get the organization working again
to help job seekers and employers in the western Upper Peninsula.”

Stockero said Massicotte has also been instrumental in encouraging the
forming of two new FIRST Robotics Teams at local schools. His business,
L’Anse Manufacturing, has provided countless hours of in-kind
support to these teams.

Massicotte and his staff have been instrumental in connecting local youth
to careers in manufacturing, Stockero said. Beginning in the 201415
school year, he supported beginning a Machine Tool program at L’Anse
Area Schools that is open to students from other districts.

Through numerous meetings and consultation with the CCISD, a plan
was put in place to offer an Industrial Arts Machine Tool program that
followed CTE standards.

Massicotte and his staff worked with the instructor to determine what
could be taught through industrial arts and what could be taught at the
local manufacturer. He then organized a local group of manufacturers
who agreed to take second-year students into their facilities to teach the
remaining CTE standards.

L’Anse Manufacturing is one those manufacturers.

To encourage students to consider a career in manufacturing, Massicotte
and his staff also open their doors for student field trips. He and his team
continue to provide students with work-based learning opportunities to
experience a machine shop in full operation.

“Mark’s tireless efforts to promote manufacturing and to provide
opportunities for students to see and experience various fields of study
are a credit to himself, his staff, and his profession,” Stockero said.

L’Anse Manufacturing Selected as Northwest Michigan PTAC Government Contractor of the Year 2016

L’Anse Manufacturing is a precision machining company with a low volume, high mix approach and a special interest in projects with tight tolerances. Their primary markets are investment casting machining, light industrial manufacturers, and specialty products including medical, aerospace, and the military.

Even though they work with a variety of customers, after the recession in 2008 and 09, L’Anse Manufacturing saw the need to diversify. They started looking at government contracts and received assistance from the Procurement Technical Assistance Center.

“We started with L’Anse Manufacturing early on in their government contract stages,” said Don Makowski, PTAC Procurement Counselor. “Starting with training their staff, attending our training events, and all the way through finding government opportunities and responding to those opportunities.”

“They allowed my crew to design their future,” said Mark Massicotte, L’Anse Manufacturing President. “When they needed help they picked up a phone and there was a resource.”

Massicotte says the assistance from PTAC has helped L’Anse Manufacturing land government contracts that have been instrumental in the company’s progress over the past few years.

“We’re really hitting a very good spot,” said Massicotte. “We got a large contract in 2016. We also at the end of the year got our first five-year contract.”

The work they’re doing has earned L’Anse Manufacturing recognition as the Northwest Michigan PTAC Government Contractor of the Year.

“L’Anse Manufacturing is a prime example of the correct steps to take as far as succeeding in government contracting,” said Makowski. “They took each step as part of the process which started out with smaller government contracts and worked up to larger government contracts.”

“PTAC is a wonderful thing, but it’s the individual people in PTAC that really bring the success forward,” said Massicotte. “So when it’s time, step forward, and you’ll find it a very rewarding investment in your time.”

Mark Massicotte from L’Anse Manufacturing received the Business Education Partnership Award at the 2016 Upper Peninsula Talent Summit.  Without the engagement of local businesses the U.P. would not be able to connect the future workforce with good local careers and help them make informed choices in their post-secondary education.

L’Anse Manufacturing owner Mark Massicotte and his staff have been instrumental in connecting local youth to careers in manufacturing.  During the 2014-2015 school year, he approached Baraga and L’Anse school districts in the hopes of opening a Machine Tool program that would be open to students from both districts.

Through numerous meetings and consultation with the Copper Country ISD, a plan was put in place to offer an Industrial Arts Machine Tool program that followed CTE standards.  Mark and his staff worked with the instructor to determine what could be taught through Industrial Arts and what could be taught at the local manufacturer.  Because all standards could not be taught through the Industrial Arts portion of the class, Mark then organized a local group of manufacturers who agreed to take second-year students into their facilities under CTE’s Less than Class Size program to teach the remaining standards.  L’Anse Mfg is one those manufacturers.

To encourage students to consider a career in manufacturing, Mark and his staff opened their doors for student and counselor field trips.  During the first year of this project, Mark and his team provided startup and technical assistance to the instructor.   They also provided students with work-based learning opportunities to experience a machine shop in full operation.

Mark’s tireless efforts to promote manufacturing and to provide opportunities for students to see and experience various fields of study are a credit to himself, his staff, and his profession.

LMI hosts technical training through grant

Like all businesses, L’Anse Manufacturing, Inc., (LMI) wants to be competitive in the workforce. For this small-town company, being competitive means keeping your employees up to date on the newest and most current manufacturing techniques available.
LMI has again submitted an application for and received a Skilled Trades Training Fund (STTF) grant, which was implemented in a class attended by 10 employees from LMI and 10 employees from other companies in the area on Jan. 10-11, 2017.
LMI serves a variety of industries, including medical, orthopedics, military, aviation, automotive, and light industrial applications. They can manufacture a wide range of materials, including steel, stainless steel, aluminum alloys, plastics, and bronze.
They also provide precision machining services to a variety of industries, including aerospace, defense, medical, and specialty markets.
To best serve these markets, where accuracy is critical, it is imperative that employees can read and interpret the drawing details as defined through geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
With the assistance of a $4,075 STTF training grant, LMI was able to bring a trainer to the Upper Peninsula and conduct a two-day training session. This allowed more of the company’s employees to participate than would otherwise be possible with training outside the area.
LMI also invited other companies in the area to participate in the two-day classroom training sessions, only having to purchase materials for the training.
The STTF awards grants to employers to assist in training, developing, and retaining current employees and individuals to be hired.
Training is customized to meet employee skill requirements and is short-term in duration, preferably less than three months, with no training extending more than six months.
The Talent Investment Agency (TIA) grants the funds to employers through Michigan’s worforce system, commonly known as Michigan Works!
Michigan Works! Agencies (MWA) Business Services staff conduct fact-finding sessions with employers to assess their talent skill gaps, suitable training providers, and availability of federal funding sources.
The MWA Business Services staff can then determine whether STTF grants would be appropriate to help close the skills gap. During the application period, MWA’s submit STTF applications to the TIA on behalf of their partnering employer.
The STTF grant provides competitive awards for employer responsive training that enhances talent, productivity, and employment retention while increasing the quality and competitiveness of Michigan’s businesses.
The STTF ensures Michigan’s employers have the talent they need to compete and grow and individuals have the skills they need for in-demand jobs.
“We are glad to have the funds for training. With the training the employee’s receive, they have more knowledge. The more knowledge an employee has, the better compensation we are able to give them, and the more our business grows,” said President of LMI, Mark Massicotte.
Businesses who request funding must actively participate in the development of the training and must commit to retaining individuals at the completion of training. New jobs created as a result of training should be filled by individuals recruited with the assistance of the local MWA.
Training programs funded by the STTF must fill a demonstrated talent need experienced by an eligible participating business. The classroom training must lead to a credential for a skill that is transferable and recognized by the industry, and leads to permanent full-time employment or continued permanent full-time employment.
A self-graded test was given in class to help participants gauge their understanding of the concepts. There were also many other exercises worked into the class to allow practice of the concepts. Certificates of completion were distributed after the class.
Among the attendees was Matt Wiesen, Production Manager at LMI.
“It was great to see our entire manufacturing team engaged in this training. The instructor was able to break down a very intimidating subject to a practical level that can be used daily by our team. The format allowed for real time questions which was valuable. Everyone participated during the class and our company is stronger now because of this training,” said Wiesen.
Having access to the advanced training provided through the STTF grant has dramatically enhanced the skill set of LMI’s current workforce and will allow them to remain competitive in the markets they serve and assist them as they further expand into the aerospace market.

L’ANSE — It may be just one small building hidden on back roads in L’Anse, but L’Anse Manufacturing creates medical, aerospace, and even military components that are shipped around the world.

Company president, Mark Massicotte, said locating the company headquarters in this little community is no mistake.

“We’re not here by accident. We’re here by choice,” explained Massicotte. “So, part of what was attractive, specifically the western part of the U.P., where work ethic is extremely strong. Primary businesses over the years have been logging and mining. They’re hard labor work, and we have generations of people that are good workers.”

Coming out of the recession a few years ago, Massicotte said in a time when small businesses took a hit, the company’s diversity of service offers kept them afloat.

He said what sets the company apart from bigger manufacturers isn’t the products they create, but rather the 24 employees that make them.

“We’re agile,” stated Massicotte. “We can provide services that other companies can’t see because they’re very much ingrained into these high-volume commodities. We’re low-volume, high-mix, which means we have to be very disciplined in what our approach is to our offer.”

What Massicotte said he hopes to focus on now is collaborative efforts in the community to bring industries together to create jobs and emphasize the importance of skilled labor.

“We need skilled employees technically sound where they can come into the shop and be functional in a short period of time,” he said. “So, we need to support in the community skilled trades training.”

That’s why L’Anse Manufacturing is a key player in the Copper Country industry initiative, GreenForces, which promotes job creation and skills training.

“How do we help people that aren’t going to college get technical training? Because that’s the people that we’re looking for: the people that have good cognitive skills that are good problem solvers,” he said.

There are plans for expansion for the company including more buildings surrounding the L’Anse headquarters and potential satellite offices around the globe.

Massicotte said he has high hopes for the L’Anse community in improving existing infrastructure and developing new opportunities.

“I will say that from a collaboration standpoint, these are exciting times, and it’s great to be part of it,” he said.

L’Anse Manufacturing Receives Operation Action U.P. Award of Excellence for 2013

L’ANSE, Michigan (January 22, 2014) – L’Anse Manufacturing, Inc. was one of four Upper Peninsula businesses to receive an Award of Excellence for 2013 during the annual meeting of Operation Action U.P. (OAUP) Tuesday in Marquette.

The OAUP Award of Excellence recognizes outstanding businesses or major institutional employers that have contributed to the economic well-being of the Upper Peninsula. The awards were presented during the group’s 50th anniversary meeting at Northern Michigan University.

Mark was nominated by Western Upper Peninsula Planning & Development Region Executive Director Kim Stoker and MTEC SmartZone CEO Marilyn Clark for leadership. According to his nomination, “Mark answered the call to help reorganize the Western Upper Peninsula Workforce Development Board. He stood up when no one else would and took the appropriate actions to get the organization working again to help job seekers and employers in the western U.P.”

The nomination continued to say, “Everyone knows that without the skilled workforce to fill open jobs and attract new employers to an area, there would be little or no economic growth. Without Mark’s leadership these things might not have happened. He took the time out of his busy schedule and attended the meetings, reviewed the paperwork and put things back on track. We in the western U.P. are grateful for his leadership and his community values.”

During the awards ceremony, Mark spoke about L’Anse Manufacturing’s commitment to educating and training employees. “The focus on training is supported by the approach that our strength is in people. Training and building cognitive skills is a key attribute for successful companies. I’d like to thank all in the U.P. who each and every day, work  diligently to make the U.P. a better place to live. Without everyone’s efforts, awards like this would not be possible,” he said.

OAUP is a privately-funded economic development organization in Michigan. Their mission is to bring together interested industrial corporations, financial institutions, utilities, institutions of higher learning, businesses and concerned citizens in a coalition that will work to create a favorable economic climate and strong employment base for the U.P.
